I Thought I’d Teach You

I thought I’d teach you how to stand.
Instead, you taught me how to stand up for those who can’t do so for themselves.

I thought I’d teach you how to walk.
Instead, you taught me how to take a step even when I was overcome with fear.

I thought I’d teach you to ride a bike.
Instead, you taught me how to ride waves of uncertainty and still find joy amid the storm.

I thought I’d teach you how to kick a ball.
Instead, you taught me how to kick down doors of opposition to advocate on your behalf.

I thought I’d teach you how to throw a punch.
Instead, you taught me how to roll with the punches without being disheartened along the way.

I thought I’d teach you how to fly a kite.
Instead, you taught me how to soar with a broken wing.

I thought I’d teach you to climb a tree.
Instead, you taught me to climb mountains.

I thought I’d teach you all these things.
Instead, you taught me so much more.

I thought I’d teach you.
Instead, you taught me.
